Skate Park Opening

Skate ParkThis was a great success, with a variety of activities provided on the day which had a huge input form young people.  Over 90 young people signed in on the day however this was not a true refection of numbers due to it being an open event. The new skate park was opened by Luke Waine a young person and the Mayor of Kendal, John Wilshaw.

Throughout the day the young people took part in:

  • Sessions on the park with Rubicon funded by Kendal LAP. Rubicon along with semi professionals of the three leading sports (skater, biker and scooter), giving tips and hints, they led the spot competitions and prize giving.
  • Graffiti sessions were on offer in conjunction with the Kendal Library putting together a piece of public art around the theme of Kendal throughout the ages.
  • Rampworx Merchandise on sale throughout the day
  • Youth bands – providing live music

The town has been abuzz with the skate park since it opened and this was a lovely celebration of the park which both thanked it’s supporters and highlighted the need for facilities which are now available to young people.

Skate Jams

Since the opening of the park there have been a few minor issues reguarding behaviour though these have been resolved quickly. The park has proven to be a popular site and we have already seen two young people gain sponsorships due to having the space to practice their sport.

One group of young people with the support of Young Cumbria, applied for money through a project called The Keyfund Award and received £500 to deliver a Skate Skool for 20 young people which took place on 2nd September 2012.  This was a youth led project from start to finish and they worked with Rubicon to put on a day that consisted of Skate lessons and a mini competition.
